'An enthralling mystery' Jane Harper, NYT bestselling author of The Dry

Keeping her secret may save her family. But telling it may save her life.

Arabella Lane, senior executive at a children's publisher, is found dead in the Thames on a frosty winter's morning after the office Christmas party. No one is sure whether she jumped or was pushed. The one person who may know the truth is the newest employee at Parker & Lane - the office temp, Eleanor.

Eleanor has travelled to London to escape the repercussions of her traumatic childhood in outback Australia, but now tragedy seems to follow her wherever she goes. To her horror, she has no memory of the crucial hours leading up to Arabella's death - memory that will either incriminate or absolve her.

As Eleanor desperately tries to remember her missing hours and uncover the events of that fateful night, her own extended family is dragged further into the dark, terrifying terrain of blame, suspicion and guilt.

Caught in a crossfire of accusations, Eleanor fears she can't even trust herself, let alone the people around her. And soon, she'll find herself in a race against time to find out just what happened that night - and discover just how deadly some secrets can be.

The Hidden Hours edition by Sara Foster Literature Fiction eBooks

First off, I had much trouble with the Kindle download which kept confusing this book with another Sara Foster book, “Come Back to Me.” When I finally was able to read it, I appreciated it even more. This was a very ambitiously written book. The writer worked hard at developing the complex character of Eleanor. Her mixture of present and past was really effective. She created a highly sympathetic character in Eleanor. However, the other characters were not as thought out and were neither interesting or likeable. The storyline was captivating and filled with suspense. However, once the mystery was solved the book fell flat and ended poorly. Suddenly the action stopped and what followed was a long and boring discussion between Eleanor and her mother. This was intended to wrap up the mystery and answer unanswered questions, but I could barely get through all the dialogue. The book went so far in building up to the ending, then lost its appeal. Also, I would have preferred that Eleanor ended up with a relationship with Wil, rather than ‘blocking his calls.’ She needed some normalcy in her life after going through the trauma she went through.

The Hidden Hours edition by Sara Foster Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The Hidden Hours took me a while to get into, but once I did, I found it was gripping reading. Most of the story is told from the point of view of Eleanor, and it’s in present tense (which I always find takes me a while to get my head around). To add to the complexity, each chapter begins with a short piece from the point of view of a minor character. There are also some shifts in tense and time which took a while to get used to, but which were used to great effect.

Eleanor is an Australian in London on her OE (that’s her Overseas Experience, a rite of passage for those of us from Australia and New Zealand). She’s living with her uncle’s family, and has a temp job as a personal assistant at her aunt’s employer. The story starts the day after the company’s Christmas party, when is discovered that an executive drowned in the River Thames following the party. The police investigate, and Eleanor finds herself in the awkward situation of being one of the last to see Arabella, but having no memory of the end of the party, or of getting home. Oh, and she’s found Arabella’s distinctive engagement ring in her handbag. Oops.

So at the most basic level, the story is a whodunit. Did Arabella fall, or was she pushed? If she was pushed, by whom? By Eleanor, who can’t remember? By Nathan, Arabella’s husband and Eleanor’s boss? But it’s also a study in messed-up families. Specifically, Eleanor’s messed-up childhood which has left her with ongoing nightmares and memories which intrude on her present life, to the point where they can get mixed up.

The writing was strong, with a unique voice and excellent characters, especially Eleanor. There was a real sense of place – the setting felt authentic to me as someone who lived in London for ten years (and I liked that feeling of recognition). My only complaint is a little swearing that I didn’t feel was necessary.

Overall, excellent.

Thanks to Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for providing a free ebook for review.
Eleanor’s memories of her nine year old self, and the traumas that had affected her family life in country Australia, would never leave her. Her mother Gillian urged Eleanor to head to London for a fresh start; to stay with her brother Ian, his wife Susan and their two girls. She hadn’t met her uncle before, but felt an affection for him, and loved the girls – but Susan was a high flying business woman, harsh and to Eleanor’s mind, a cold woman.

After only being at her temp position for three weeks – the one her aunt had set up for her, as she was an integral part of the children’s publishing house – the Christmas party cruising on the Thames was looming and Eleanor wasn’t sure she wanted to go. She hadn’t made any friends and knew she would feel uncomfortable. But she did go – and it was the beginning of another dark and terrible time in her life, and in the lives of those around her.

For Arabella Lane’s body was found in the Thames the following morning – and Eleanor had briefly been in her company at the party the night before. But the worst for Eleanor was – she had no memory of those hours; the police continued to question her. Did they believe her? Her past kept colliding with the present – why couldn’t it leave her alone? Why was this happening to her? Would she ever find the inner peace she craved?

The Hidden Hours is another gripping psychological thriller by Aussie author Sara Foster which is filled with intensity, emotion and grief. The tragedy which was the young Eleanor’s life was written well – past chapters interspersed with the present day and drawing in the incredible trauma of her adult life. Written in present tense, (which always feels strange to me!) it didn’t take me long to settle into the rhythm of the story. I thoroughly enjoyed The Hidden Hours and highly recommend it.
Boring
Well developed characters, enough mystery to keep you interested, entertaining read.
Pretty good. Liked the characters. Felt like the end needed a little more.
The character was quite annoying and much of the book was too repetitive about her problems and the end was unsatisfactory.
This was a fabulous novel. Having never read Sara Foster before I am now such a fan and have more of her books in my to be read pile.

I loved the changing landscape between what occurred in Australia, contrasting with what occurred in England. This transition between the two stories was seamless, and in the end I couldn't decide which I needed the answers too quicker.

Cannot wait to get started on another Sara Foster novel soon.
