I went looking for older, (1915-1930), public domain freebies with Boy Scouting themes. The books by Percy Fitzhugh, (Pee Wee Harris, the Bridgeboro Boys, and especially the brilliant Tom Slade), were a tremendous find. The other books, like this one, were interesting enough, but unexceptional.
In this particular book a group of Scouts is caught between German and French lines during World War I, and the war is treated like a fun clambake. The boy heroes are interchangeable for the most part and if they didn't address each other directly by name they would be indistinguishable. Scenes of high action are mixed in with scenes in which the kids are pretty dense; there is a lot of yelling at German soldiers who annoy the boys by often speaking in German.
It's all positive and upbeat, and some individual action scenes are ripping, but overall it's pretty slow going.
A good story but not the best by this author.....
